The Third First-Annual Beer Battered Play Festival
(Or the First Third-Annual Beer Battered Play Festival)
[Or The Second Second Annual Beer Battered Play Festival]
TO BE CLEAR THIS IS THE THIRD TIME WE'RE DOING THIS
STRANGEDOG
BEER-BATTERED
NEW PLAY FESTIVAL
...But only cause it was so much fun the first two times.
The Third First Annual Beer Battered Play Festival will be held March 21st and 22nd at the happiest place on earth, Tierney's Tavern Upstairs. It's a festival celebrating new plays in a non-traditional setting, communal story telling, live music, and what a good time a night of theatre in a bar can be. See our past winners here and here.
We're accepting submissions now. Like right now. This very minute. We might have just gotten one while you were reading this!
Are you a playwright? Do you know a playwright? Have you seen a play once and imagine writing one would be fairly simple so you'd like to give it a try? We're now accepting script submissions. Please read all the submission guidelines. Part of the fun of this fest is it's one of those self-production festivals. Please only submit if you're ready and rearing to bring in a production of your play. Submissions Guidelines and Self-Production details are below.
There is no submission fee. We are accepting submissions through January 15, 2014.
Let's get going on this,
..
Five (ish) new "winning" plays by emerging playwrights will be selected by our committee to be performed in the festival on Friday and Saturday March 21st and 22nd. Winners will be notified by February 1st, and then have a month and a half to put their production together.
Plays should be…
- Ten minutes (ish) in length.
- Unpublished.
- Simple production requirements. (Say could be performed on a blank stage in a bar. Or at the bar itself.)
This is one of those "Self Production" Festivals
- You know the ones! Playwright's are completely responsible for assembling and organizing the "production" of their play, i.e. finding a director, casting, and rehearsing. All plays must be staged and performed "off book."
- During the day on the first date of the festival (March 21st) is a mandatory tech day, where the StrangeDog crew will accommodate any lights or sound, along with focusing on evening cohesiveness to achieve not just a festival, but a solid night of entertainment. (If you would like to tech or see the space before this day, that can be arranged.)
- If selected, you can reach out to StrangeDog for any help you'd need in putting your production together, but please don't submit if you feel you will not be able to self-produce your play.
What kind of plays should you send?
- Here's the kind of plays we like: Funny plays. Sad plays. Funny plays. Scary plays. Smart plays, funny plays, really funny plays, plays about characters, plays about ideas, plays that surprise us, and worry us, make us marvel and that make us think. And plays that are funny.
The Drunken Judges Award: Each evening of performance will feature “The Drunken Judges Award” in which an non-industry non-professional (perhaps someone who has never even been to a play before) will be chosen, thoroughly inebriated, and at the conclusion of the performance will select their favorite play of the evening.
